There has been no shortage of hysteria about gun control put forth by the liberal media and Democrats. We knew they were going to use tragedy as opportunity and now we have our first look at the assault on the Second Amendment they are planning.
Many expected a return of the so-called ‘Assault Weapons Ban’ which was enacted in 1994 but allowed to lapse in 2004 after its ‘benefits’ were shown to be non-existent.
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D – Calif) yesterday unveiled legislation that would expand the definition of ‘assault weapon’ to include 80% of the firearms currently sold in the United States. Most troubling, even those gun owners grandfathered in before the legislation is enacted would be subject to intrusive and unconstitutional restrictions and monitoring.
Feinstein would see the United States ban the sale of a wide variety of weapons. Most notably the ban includes, “Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.”
Notice this isn’t just about high powered rifles anymore. Democrats are going after handguns now, the most prevalent weapon used by Americans to protect themselves and their families.
The measure seeks to capitalize on the fallacy that high capacity magazines are what allowed the killers at Virginia Tech, Aurora and Sandy Creek to cause such mayhem. It however disregards the fact that Seung-Hui Cho was able to carry out his deadly mission using two pistols, one of which only had the capability to hold 10 rounds.
These were not extraordinary weapons by any means and ignores the fact that Cho killed 32 people and wounded 17 with relatively mundane firearms. The fact is that it takes seconds to swap out a gun’s magazine and limiting the number of rounds in it does nothing to limit the damage it can do.
By putting a 10-round qualifier on the definition of ‘assault weapon’, the measure would outlaw the future purchase of guns which most Americans buy.
Oh sure, Democrats are willing to ‘grandfather’ in current owners of these handguns. However, not without onerous restrictions and requirements.
Firearm types and serial numbers would be recorded. Most troubling, gun owners would be forced to register and be photographed and fingerprinted.
I don’t care what party you belong to, if you don’t object to the forced registration of a group of citizens that simply want to exercise their constitutional rights, then there is something very wrong with you and your vision for this nation.
Further, these newly classified weapons would fall under the regulations of the National Firearms Act. This would include heavy taxes, prevent the transfer of gun ownership to even your children, and even force owners to obtain permission from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to transport a firearm across state lines.
This proposed legislation and any other ‘gun control’ measure to be proposed in Washington DC and in our local statehouses are nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to tragic but rare events.
They do nothing to address the real causes behind these events (lack of morality in society, the decline of the family unit, drugging children rather than disciplining them, etc).
What we have here is a crisis of culture, not one of gun control. Are Americans truly ready to relinquish their constitutional rights? It is a slippery slope and one which we must not fall down.
