postheadericon Post & News: Thank you veterans – Please pay $25.00

The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News are currently running an ad in their papers (click here to view it) proclaiming that they would like to honor our “Hometown Heroes” – our veterans.  They are going to be running a photo gallery for those that have served and are serving this nation in the armed forces.  People can submit a photo and five lines of text that will be included in a special section of the paper on September 15th titled “Medal of Honor.”

I find this to be a great idea – our veterans deserve this type of recognition.  This can serve as a small token of our appreciation for the millions of men and women that have served with the pride, honor, courage, and commitment that have made this nation what it is today.

However, people should not believe that the Post and News are being entirely altruistic in doing this.  They have in fact taken what could be an extraordinary chance to thank these American heroes and turned it into a profit center for themselves by charging veterans and their families $25.00 to be included in the section.  I find this reprehensible and offensive.  Here we have companies that proclaim themselves good corporate and community citizens and yet they are trying to make a profit on the backs of those have sacrificed so much for this country.

I for one am a veteran who will not add to the Post and News coffers and I will in fact discourage others from doing so as well.  The Post and News have earned themselves a “Medal of Dishonor” for this act.  I encourage all veterans and their families to contact the editorial boards of these papers and let them know that thanking our veterans should not come with a price tag!  Our veterans and their families have paid enough!
