postheadericon Survey gives Penry and Frazier the lead

Republican elephantIn a survey of 500 people conducted by Mount Virtus, Slapstick Politics and People’s Press Collective a clear leader for the Republican nomination for governor has emerged while the Senate race is a bit more muddled.

The results give gubernatorial candidate Josh Penry a clear 17 point lead over Scott McInnis.  Certainly given the results of current Colorado Governor Bill Ritter’s first term, any contender is going to present a threat to Democratic leadership of Colorado.

In the race for the United States Senate, three front runners have emerged.  Ryan Frazier leads the field followed by Ken Buck and Jane Norton.  Those three however are very closely spaced and separated by less than six points.  Cleve Tidwell is the next closest contender but he trails the top three by 15 points.

A lot can happen between now and when the primaries are held but the survey provides interesting insight.  Click here to view the results on Mount Virtus.

Not so sure what folks’ fascination is with Frazier. He may be able to handle the job but he has little background experience to prove it. It is a mighty big jump to go from a couple years experience as a city councilman to the United States Senate. If we nominate him, I worry he would be a lamb to the slaughter.

Tony, thanks for the link and the plug to our survey! Deserving of at least as much credit is Michael Sandoval of Slapstick Politics (http://slapstickpolitics.blogspot.com) and People’s Press Collective (http://peoplespresscollective.org). We hope to continue these surveys into the future — Let me know if you wish to be on our distribution list for the announcements we send out.

To Robert, I would ask which Republican candidate in the Senate race has more legislative experience than Frazier, and which candidate has been elected on his/her own to serve a larger district than Frazier? Food for thought….

      Ben,

I like your site and your writing but it seems like most Colorado bloggers have this preoccupation with Ryan Frazier and they are cheerleading the guy on without an objective look.

He has little political experience, little life experience and his progressive social views are a real concern to many on the right. I think some of the others better represent many conservatives.

My biggest concern is ensuring we nominate someone who can actually win in November 2010. Therein lies by biggest concern. The battle is going to be hard no matter is nominated and Frazier’s lack of experience could hurt enough to cost us the opportunity to take the seat.

    • Tony:

Thanks, Ben. I will drop you a note.

Not sure who did that poll, or where the did it. I’ve often been amazed when the fore-runners in political poles lose ground to a tailgater. The reality is that while those front runners are working to impress poll takers, the tailgater is serving up meat and beans to the folks who are really going to be voting, making friends and ultimately running the race to win.

Frazier, Buck and Norton better be checking their tails because Tidwell will be a leader in the race for senate, not in the polls but in the election – where it counts.

I think Frazier certainly has a charisma that the others lack and he is saying the right things. Folks seem to gravitate toward him not unlike (dare I say) our current president. Will that be enough to put him over the top? I don’t know. It takes more than a pretty face and Republican voters aren’t swayed as easily by superficial stuff as Dems.
