If you live in Colorado, unless you live under a rock, you know who Tim Tebow is. The potential future of the Denver Broncos has become a hero for some, a villain for others, and not because of his play on the field but because of the man himself.
Tebow is an devout Christian and while he does not openly profess it or preach it, he also makes no apologies for his faith – nor should he. He also is famous for the story of how he came into this world when his mother disregarded doctors’ advice to have an abortion due to dangers to her health when she was pregnant.
The Heisman Trophy winner became a big target of women’s rights groups and Planned Parenthood when Focus on the Family aired an ad featuring Tebow and his mom. The very innocuous advertisement seemed to not only heighten his support but had a similar effect with his detractors making them much more against him.
Images of Tebow kneeling, bowing his head and saying a few words to God while on the football field and in the locker room recently have the anti-religious leftists and feminists going nuts. The pose has gone viral with people now ‘Tebowing’, much like the idiotic ‘planking’ that seemed amusing to the simpleminded in this world.
While Tebow has said he doesn’t mind the mimics, it is often done as a form of mockery. Opposing players did it on the field this past weekend and fans who dislike the man have taken it on as their way of making fun of him.
The thing is, these people aren’t just making fun of the man – they are mocking his belief in God and by proxy, mocking God himself. It is actually quite disgraceful and a sad commentary not on Tebow but on those that are doing the ‘Tebowing.’
Much to my amazement, local sportscaster Drew Soicher launched a scathing commentary the other night on the topic of ‘Tebowing’ that echoes my thoughts.
Soicher said, “There is nothing funny about ‘Tebowing.’ This growing phenomenon of people kneeling in pose like Tim Tebow is rude, disrespectful behavior. Disparagement made at Tebow’s character is disgraceful.”
“You want to mimic Tim Tebow? Great idea! Stop posing like him, and start living like him,” Soicher said in closing.
I couldn’t agree more. Watch Soicher’s commentary below:
