postheadericon Susan Boyle – A lesson in not judging a book by its cover

This is completely outside the normal range of items we post on here but after watching the video and reading the story on one Susan Boyle, we feel compelled to share it.

“Britain’s Got Talent” is a television show not unlike the similar one here in the United States (is it still on?).  Performers show a variety of talents to a panel of judges including American Idol’s Simon Cowell and they are judged.  The winner of the show gets to perform for Queen Elizabeth and singers often get record deals.

Last week a most unlikely contestant appeared on the show.  A 47 year old Scotswoman who takes the stage to laughter at her frumpy, double-chinned appearance – the crowd and judges certain this was a joke.  One of the judges, Piers Morgan recently blogged about it saying, “Then Susan bounced on stage, full of tartan bonhomie, and the reaction was instantaneous: 3,000 people laughed their heads off, me and my co-judges, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden, stifled a chuckle, and the clear message from our collective expressions was “This is going to be a car-crash performance of epic proportions.”"

The laughs of the crowd and judges soon changed to cheers and tears as Ms. Boyle gave what is nothing but a truly extraordinary performance of “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables.  In doing so she makes us stop and think about our overemphasis on appearances and reminds us that it truly is what is inside that matters.  Below is the incredibly moving performance she gave.

I saw this as a trending topic on twitter and as well checked out the video earlier today. Pretty darn cool. I loved the expressions of the judges and the explosion in the crowd!
