Is the Department of Homeland Security watching you? If you are a "right-winger" then they might be.

Is the Department of Homeland Security watching you? If you are a "right-winger" then they might be.

News broke on Tuesday of a report issued by the Department of Homeland Security warning of the “threat of right-wing extremism”.  The report, sent to state and local law enforcement authorities, warns of potential threats from a wide array of the populace including military veterans, gun owners, those against abortion, and illegal immigration opponents.

The report warns of “those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely.”  In a particularly offensive part of the report, DHS warns of returning military veterans alluding to a connection with Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.  It warns that veterans present greater danger due to their “combat skills and experience” and could be a boost to “violent capabilities.”  It goes on to warn of the “potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks” by or composed of veterans.

Rather than disavow and recall this absolutely offensive report, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano has chosen to defend it.  In a statement Napalitano said, “We are on the lookout for criminal and terrorist activity but we do not – nor will we ever – monitor ideology or political beliefs.”

Yeah, right.  I don’t buy it for a second.  This report is nothing less than a political hit job.  Veterans and any others that fit in a category this report mentions – about 50% of the nation – should be alarmed by this and voice their protest.

Thankfully, the American Legion has already stepped forward to defend veterans.  In a letter to Secretary Napolitano, American Legion National Commander David Rehbein voiced his and the Legion’s dissatisfaction with the report.  Rehbein said, “To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical ‘disgruntled military veteran’ is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam.”

Tony’s Rants targeted by Homeland Security?

Coincidentally, I was looking at the statistics for tonysrants.com seeing how much traffic the site has gotten, from where, etc.  See below for an interesting little statistic.  The 12th most common visitor to my site is the Department of Homeland Security!

I am not really a conspiracy theorist and choose instead to believe that someone at DHS just happens to like what I write.  If they wanted to really monitor this site, they certainly have the knowhow to hide their tracks.  However, it does make you wonder.

Is the Department of Homeland Security monitoring tonysrants.com?

That is a little bit freaky to see them show up on your logs like that.

  • Erik Hansen:

And they say it’s not about chilling free speech. Just look at college campuses today and their speech codes to see what their agenda is really all about.

  • Sandy N:

Why should we expect anything less from these people? The left’s disdain for the military and anything connected with it is well documented. This report is just another glaring example of that.

  • Todd:

What a bunch of crappola! It’s just like the guy that got pulled over on this YouTube video. Watch this and tell me our 1st amendment rights and civil liberties aren’t being ripped apart by President Obama and his following cultish thugocracy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3DR5tkjeAU

    I just had a “D_O_H” moment!

I followed your link from a mutual forum to see your site you referred to and realized that if the DHS is following your site they are also following ME now because I clicked on YOU!!!!!!

    D_O_H

(I’d give my site name… but alas… I don’t want DHS watching MY blog)

oh wait. Did I say “thanks”?

  • Tony:

Willnevergiveup – At least if I go down I am taking you with me! :)

    Whoa sloooow down here guys.

    1. If DHS were monitoring any site, they would do it from anonymous terminals.

    2. If someone digs through the server logs, they will see I’m on a Gov PC too. I’m basically a Gov employee using my lunchbreak to surf items that personally interest me. It’s allowed under policy.

Just because you have hits from DHS (btw, those hits came from Customs and Border) It doesn’t mean big bad DHS is moinitoring you, but who knows… it may.

When I look in the server logs for MY website, I see hits from a plethora of Gov agencies to include FBI, DOD, house/senate, EPA, etc.

Patriot, thanks for the comment! Like I said in my post, I don’t really believe DHS is monitoring this site – “If they wanted to really monitor this site, they certainly have the knowhow to hide their tracks.”

I simply found irony and humor in seeing them in my logs. :) I think most of the other comments as well reflect a light-hearted view on it.
