postheadericon One of the most patriotic – and yet unknown – passages ever writtten

Certainly the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and any number of quotes from men and women in this nation’s history stir feelings of patriotism among Americans.  There is one though that most Americans have probably never heard.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion is recited before every meeting of the Legion.  It is a passage that speaks to all Americans, not just Legionnaires, and calls them to truly noble goals.  It serves as a reminder of the mission of every citizen of this great nation and the responsibility we all bear.

I have been meaning to post this for some time now.  Please read and study this as I truly believe it speaks volumes.

The American Legion Preamble to the Constitution

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES:

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;

To maintain law and order;

To foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism;

To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars;

To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation;

To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;

To make right the Master of Might;

To promote peace and goodwill on earth;

To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;

To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
