postheadericon Fire U.S. Attorneys? Take Advice from the Clintons!

The latest so-called scandal to hit Washinton…  President Bush fired eight U.S. attorneys.  For whatever reason this is raising a furor on Capitol Hill.  Maybe he should have called his predecessor or the esteemed junior senator from New York for advice!

You see, one little known fact that seems to escape everyone in the media and Congress, is that in 1993, then Attorney General Janet Reno fired not one, not two, not eight U.S. attorneys – she fired all 93 of them in one fell swoop and gave them 10 days to clear out of their offices.

Remember that U.S. attorneys are political appointees which means that they serve at the pleasure of the President of the United States.  If wants to can one or 93, he can do so – that is his right.

In 1993, President Clinton said, "All those people are routinely replaced and I have not done anything differently."  Let's check on that…  Wrong again President Clinton.  That move was unprecedented as President's Reagan and Carter and both retained previous administrations' attorneys and only replaced them gradually.  Let us also not forget that at the time, Whitewater was starting to really heat up.  Awfully convenient that the U.S. attorney for Little Rock that was doing the investigation was dismissed at the same time and replaced with "Friend of Bill" Paula Casey.

About the only thing the Bush White House can be accused of is poorly handling the issue with the press and public – sadly a recurring theme.  This is simply about eight disgruntled attorneys who are mad they were fired – what employee wouldn't be.  That doesn't make it a crime or mean there is anything wrong with it.
