A YouTube video posted this week by an upset dad has gone viral and even made its way to the Drudge Report.  Seeking to teach his daughter a lesson, Tommy Jordan puts nine rounds from his .45 through her laptop.  While my kids aren’t old enough to be on Facebook yet, they have now been put on notice that their computer could suffer a similar fate if the situation were to play out in my home.

Titled “Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen” (see below), Jordan reads a highly inflammatory posting made by his 15-year-old daughter to Facebook.  He then proceeds to rationally, point by point, dissect and dismiss the rebellious and disrespectful teenager’s argument.

In the coup de grâce at the end of the video, Jordan whips out his M1911 .45 (a very nice gun by the way), and shoots the daughter’s laptop full of holes.  He explains that his daughter’s next computer will be paid for with her own money.

As Jordan explains in the video, this is not the first time his daughter has used technology inappropriately.  It now appears it will be the last time though for quite a while.

Since posting the video Wednesday, it has spread swiftly and as of this writing it has over 2.1 million views.  As one would expect, the reaction has been mixed and while most applaud the dad for his actions, others question him.

Naturally there have been plenty of 1960s hippies and their liberal offspring posting their disdain for Jordan being so ‘cruel’ at holding his daughter accountable.

The FOX affiliate in Dallas even ran a five minute long segment featuring a Dr Susan Fletcher, Family Psychologist.  The good doctor was concerned that the punishment wasn’t ‘natural and logical’.  She goes on to make the nonsensical comment that it was particularly ‘alarming’ because a firearm was used.

Really?  So an ax or hammer would have made this do-gooder feel better about it?  How dumb.

In the end you have a father who saw his daughter heading down the wrong road.  She had performed similar misdeeds, suffered consequences (yes, children, there is such a thing) and was warned what would happen if it occurred again.

Despite clearly laid out expectations, the daughter chose to test the boundaries again and her laptop suffered as a result.  So be it.  I applaud Jordan for teaching his children that there is a right way and a wrong way to act and conduct your life and if you fail to do it properly, there are indeed penalties.

Those who would question this dad’s actions are merely indicative of the lack of respect we see in youth today and the moral decay our nation has suffered in recent generations.

From the time they were born, I have instilled in my kids the same values that I was raised with including respect, honor and honesty.  They are well aware even at their young age that their actions have consequences.  When they choose to disregard the moral compass instilled in them, I ensure it is set straight.

My kids are just shy of being old enough to be on Facebook and despite their nagging to allow me to let them go ahead and join, I will not.  However, you can bet that I will spy on my kids’ online activities just as Jordan did.  Further, should they act out as his daughter chose to, my kids’ computer will suffer a similar fate although I will be using a Springfield XD(M) .45 instead of an M1911.

Editor’s note: No one ever accused teenagers of being overly brilliant.  As it turns out, the daughter had indeed hid her Facebook postings from her parents.  She however neglected to hide it from their dog’s Facebook account which the dad happened to check thus revealing the daughter’s posting.  Love it!
