postheadericon Obama equates containing oil spill to 9/11 and war

President Barack ObamaTonight President Obama will address the nation in his first speech from the Oval Office and discuss the unfolding ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.  In bizarre comments the president has equated the oil spill to the September 11th terrorist attacks and war.

As reported by the Climate Change Examiner, Obama told POLITICO:

[I]n the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, indelibly by 9/11. I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come.

Speaking in Florida today, the president told a gathering at Pensacola Naval Air Station, “This is an assault on our shores.”

Equating an ecological disaster with a terrorist attack or war is a ridiculous comparison.  It diminishes the events of 9/11 and the subsequent wars and lessens the sacrifices of thousands who have given their lives.

I tire of the use of analogies that try to draw parallels between something completely unrelated and the military.  President Obama is hardly the first.  We see it frequently with sports stars when they talk about ‘doing battle’ with an opponent or ‘going to war’ against another team or player.

It is an asinine comparison that ironically typically comes from those that have never done battle, have never gone to war and never did a moment of service in the military.

Trying to contain an oil spill or playing a ball game is not war.  It is not battle.  Don’t pretend it I and don’t say it is.

Jumping back to the oil spill and the failed response, let me say that BP’s actions have certainly been even more disastrous.  Both the government and the company have failed us.

Ever the opportunist, the president stands ready to jump and push his vision of energy policy.  The Climate Change Examiner writes:

Rahm Emanuel, President Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff, famously told top executives in 2008, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” Living by this credo, the president is poised to use the Gulf of Mexico oil spill to push for climate change legislation in an address to the nation tomorrow.
