Voter turnout in the U.S. among worst in the world
I am always amazed when after an election the numbers of people that vote are so dismal. This little nugget was in the Rocky Mountain News today:
Claim: Voter turnout in the United States ranks in the bottom quarter of all democracies worldwide.
During the 1990s, the United States ranked 140th out of 163 democracies in the percent of the population that voted, according to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
What was the U.S. voter turnout percentage? It was less than half. Only 44.9 percent of Americans eligible to vote did so during the 1990s.
Overall, the U.S. during the 1990s ranked right between Chad and Botswana. The highest turnout was in Malta at nearly 97 percent. The lowest was in Mali at 27 percent.
That means that approximately only 1 out of every 2 people in this country vote. Think about that. Half of those coworkers, friends and family members that you have to listen to complaining about the state of affairs don’t even bother to excercise their Constitutional right to do something about it. That is sad.
