With congressional approval ratings lower than ever, what will congressmen face when they come home for the August recess?

The August congressional recess begins this week.  The annual working vacation allows senators and representatives to return to their home states and districts to hear from their constituents.  Many will hold the familiar town hall forums allowing them to tell voters what they are doing for them and conversely, to answer questions from their employers.

This year the American electorate is none too pleased with Congress and the president as they have done very little to stem the economic bleeding our country is suffering through.  Other pressing issues include cap and trade taxes that will hurt the economy and employers as well as a government run healthcare scheme that will add more than $1 trillion to an already record deficit.

  • What exactly is Obamacare?  It is tough to say as President Obama told union audiences during the campaign something much different from what he says now.  Watch the video below.

Here in Colorado, what our elected officials face when they come home is yet to be seen.  However, some congressmen across the nation are already feeling the heat as constituents have quickly let their thoughts be heard on these and other issues (see links below).  Face the State reported that at least one member of Congress from Colorado, Diana DeGette (D, Denver), has chosen to hide rather than hear from those who elected her.

In the north area, Representative Ed Perlmutter of the 7th Congressional District represents most of Adams County and portions of Arapahoe and Jefferson counties.  Rep. Perlmutter will hold only one town hall meeting on August 8th in Brighton at a King Soopers store (click here for details).  This is despite the fact he has a district that is more than 75 miles wide and encompasses 1,265 square miles with over 600,000 residents.   I guess much like DeGette, he isn’t too interested in hearing from his constituents.

Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District is perhaps the model for a member of Congress seeking to hear from constituents as he will hold six events while he is back home in Colorado (click here for schedule).  The most convenient of those for Thornton residents to attend is being held on Saturday, September 5th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Welby New Technology High School (1200 East 78th Avenue #105 Thornton, CO 80229).

It will be interesting to see and hear what these Colorado congressmen face when they get home.  Hopefully they take back to D.C. the utter disappointment, dissatisfaction and disgust we feel about what is going on in Congress, how this nation is being run and where it is headed.
