How is Adams 12 Five Star District handling Obama’s speech to schoolchildren?
September 3rd, 2009 . by Tony
Update, 3:30pm: Adams 12 Five Star Schools Superintendent Mike Paskewicz is leaving it up to individual principals / administrators to decide whether or not to show President Obama’s speech.
We know of at least one elementary school that has opted NOT to show the speech and will instead focus on the established curriculum (as they should in IMHO). They will make a tape of the speech available to check out for those that want to see it.
One middle school in the district will be taping it after which teachers may review it and determine its appropriateness for their curriculum. If the teacher decides it fits within the curriculum, they can develop an appropriate lesson and show the speech. Parents at that school will have the option to opt out of having their children see it.

Original story: Many parents are wondering how Adams 12 Five Star School District is going to address President Obama’s speech to schoolchildren next week. Will they allow the propaganda to be broadcast unfettered? Will parents have a choice to opt their kids out of having to participate?
The answer as of this writing is we simply don’t know. Emails to the district and one school’s principal have gone unanswered for six hours now. In calling one school, we were told that district principals were discussing the issue this morning and would have an answer soon. We will update this as soon as we hear anything.
How do you feel about the issue? Leave a message in the comment section and let us know!

Too bad Adams 12 chose to cave to the right wing nuts. They should have stood up for our children’s education.
Adams 12 made the right choice in letting the decision rest with parents. The speech will certainly be shown on the Internet and if parents want their kids to watch it, they can.
I so agree, I think it is the parents right and decision to show this to their children. This has nothing to do with the schools cirriculum, especially with the Elementary students (the younger children). If my daughter wants to see this, I will preview it first then if I feel it is appropriate I will let her watch it, AT HOME.
Can we please cease with the “right wing nut” rhetoric? This is about parents having the right to determine what their kids learn and are exposed to rather than the school deciding.. not everyone sees Obama as the Messiah.. I can only imagine what liberals would be doing if Bush had suggested a speech during his term. We’d be talking them down off the ledge no doubt…
I think it is a shame that parents. educators and administration of these great schools have opted out of allowing the students to watch the speech. Regardless of party affiliation Mr. Obama is the President of the United States of America, the highest level of office and our country’s leader. His message was far from inappropriate and something that children need to reflect and pertains directly to a work ethic in school that is required to be successful. I am a parent of four and very disappointed in our school district for not have offering an option at the very least. This also gives an important message that these children and their future are valued and worthy of such a speech. My children have already watched the speech, I feel like the option to not do it at school with their educators was a poor choice and proves that we are not yet a country that can work together across the isle in an area so valuable and important-educating our children and encouraging positive education choices for their future.

Traci….Liberals would only react to Bush giving our kids a speech because the man is as dumb as a box of rocks, not for nothing, but look what he did to our country in 8 short years!
I’m disappointed in Mike’s decision to let the schools decide. And it’s not about parents having a vote. We don’t vote on thier cirriculum and yet we never question it. If you actually LISTENED to the speech, you would know it was one everyone in America should have heard. I would encourage any one in doubt to go here:

and read it. I promise you, you will not automatically become a socialist.
The only way a mind works is if it’s open……open your minds people. Quit with the racism, which is what I believe this comes down too.
No one can be so stupid as to think that your kids can be “recruited” into socialism by one speech, if you do, then I question your parenting skills.
Great way to elevate the debate, Denise. Your first sentence pretty much shows you have very little original thought. Insults only demean yourself.
If you took the time to understand things before commenting, folks were not as upset about the speech as they were the original proposed lesson plans. The plans were quite political and it is understandable that parents who do not subscribe to the president’s left-wing politics would be concerned.
Certainly there is no balance to political discussions in today’s union dominated schools so there is no reason to trust the education system to give an even handed discussion on the issue.
As for the racism thing… It is so asinine that liberals resort to claims like that and it shows ignorance. Is it really so hard to believe that people simply are not happy with the mounting national debt, the corporate welfare, the social welfare, the corruption, the growing unemployment? Any one of those things would be enough to make a reasonable person upset and when you put them all together you can bet there is going to be dissent. It has nothing to do with race.
I saw a sign at one of the 9/12 protests that fits this to the tee – “Definition of a racist: A conservative winning an argument with a liberal”
